How to Calculate Percentages
Finding a percentage of a number
To find a percentage of a number, multiply the percentage (as a decimal) by the number:
Formula: (Percentage / 100) × Number
Example: What is 25% of 200?
(25 / 100) × 200 = 0.25 × 200 = 50
Finding what percentage one number is of another
To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the first number by the second, then multiply by 100:
Formula: (Number1 / Number2) × 100
Example: 50 is what percentage of 200?
(50 / 200) × 100 = 0.25 × 100 = 25%
Finding percentage increase or decrease
To find the percentage change between two values, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100:
Formula: ((New Value - Original Value) / Original Value) × 100
Example: What is the percentage increase from 100 to 125?
((125 - 100) / 100) × 100 = (25 / 100) × 100 = 0.25 × 100 = 25%
Finding the original value before a percentage change
To find the original value before a percentage change, when you know the final value and the percentage change:
Formula for increase: Original Value = Final Value / (1 + (Percentage Change / 100))
Example: If a value increased by 25% to 125, what was the original value?
Original Value = 125 / (1 + (25 / 100)) = 125 / 1.25 = 100
Formula for decrease: Original Value = Final Value / (1 - (Percentage Change / 100))
Example: If a value decreased by 20% to 80, what was the original value?
Original Value = 80 / (1 - (20 / 100)) = 80 / 0.8 = 100
Finding the final value after a percentage change
To find the final value after a percentage change, when you know the original value and the percentage change:
Formula for increase: Final Value = Original Value × (1 + (Percentage Change / 100))
Example: If a value of 100 increases by 25%, what is the final value?
Final Value = 100 × (1 + (25 / 100)) = 100 × 1.25 = 125
Formula for decrease: Final Value = Original Value × (1 - (Percentage Change / 100))
Example: If a value of 100 decreases by 20%, what is the final value?
Final Value = 100 × (1 - (20 / 100)) = 100 × 0.8 = 80
