About BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in meters squared.

BMI Categories:
  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
  • Obesity: BMI 30 or greater
Note: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool. It does not directly measure body fat or health. Athletes may have a high BMI due to muscle mass, not excess fat.
BMI Limitations

While BMI is useful for most people, it has some limitations:

  • It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others with muscular builds
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons and those who have lost muscle mass
  • It doesn't account for differences in body composition between genders
  • It doesn't distinguish between fat, muscle, and bone
  • It doesn't account for ethnic and racial differences in body composition

For a more comprehensive assessment, consider combining BMI with other measurements like waist circumference or body fat percentage.
